Working during and after study in Spain

Understand the legal conditions first, then evaluate how your programme connects to employers and further study.

Work rules in Spain

Since 20 May 2025, students holding a study stay for higher education may work up to 30 hours a week without a separate permit, as long as the work is compatible with their studies, for as long as the study authorisation lasts. Other study stays, such as language courses, do not carry this automatic right. After graduating, students can apply to change to a job-search or a residence and work authorisation, so check the timing before the study authorisation ends.

Working while you study

  • Up to 30 hours a week during higher-education study, with no separate permit, as long as the work is compatible with your studies.
  • The right follows the validity of your study authorisation, so it ends when the authorisation ends.
  • Internships (prácticas) that are part of your programme are arranged through an agreement between your university and the employer.

After you graduate

Graduates of Spanish higher education can apply to switch from the study stay to a job-search or a residence and work authorisation. Regulated professions, such as medicine or architecture, have their own requirements before you can practise, including homologación for degrees earned abroad.

Use institutional career support

Ask universities about internships, career services, employer partnerships and graduate outcomes for your field.

Plan beyond graduation

Graduate residence and employment routes are separate from admission. Start checking them well before student status ends.
