Instituto Cervantes, El español en el mundo 2025How higher education works in Spain
Spain has 50 public universities and a fast-growing number of private universities, alongside business schools and centres attached to a university. Official bachelor's (grado), master's (máster universitario) and doctoral degrees follow the European Higher Education Area's structure and are listed in the national RUCT register; many universities and schools also award their own qualifications (títulos propios), which are not official Spanish degrees, so check the award type for the exact programme.
What Spain offers international students
- Official degrees built on the European Higher Education Area's structure and ECTS credits, which makes them easier to compare across Europe; recognition for work or further study abroad is still decided by the receiving country or institution.
- Public universities whose fees are regulated public prices, usually well below what private providers charge.
- Spanish as a language you can study in and take into your career, with regional co-official languages adding to the mix in some regions.
- Established university cities beyond Madrid and Barcelona, from Salamanca and Granada to Valencia and Santiago de Compostela.
Public or private: compare the model, not the label
Public universities allocate bachelor's places by admission grade through regional calls and teach mostly in Spanish or a co-official language, with a growing English-taught offer. Private universities and business schools set their own admission tests, fees and calendars and often teach more programmes in English. Neither is automatically better: compare the award type, teaching language, total cost and admission route for the exact programme.
Compare before you commit
Use the live Spain catalogue to compare institutions, study levels, teaching languages and tuition data where universities have published them.
What to verify before choosing
Historic public universities, specialist business schools and programmes taught in both Spanish and English. Shortlist a programme only after checking its teaching language, campus and current intake.
