The route for Spain
Non-EU students coming for more than 90 days need a long-stay study authorisation, applied for as a student visa at the Spanish consulate covering their place of residence. Since 20 May 2025, under Royal Decree 1155/2024, the authorisation for higher education covers the whole programme instead of being renewed every year. Students staying longer than six months apply for their foreign national identity card (TIE) within a month of arrival. EU citizens register their residence instead.
What the consulate usually asks for
- The admission letter from a recognised institution for full-time study that is taught in person, or at least mainly in person.
- Proof of funds for each month of stay, calculated from Spain's IPREM income indicator.
- Private health insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with no co-payments, waiting periods or coverage limits.
- For stays of more than 180 days: a criminal record certificate from the countries where you lived in the last five years, if you are an adult, and a medical certificate.
- Legalised and translated documents, following the consulate's own checklist.
After you arrive
- If you are staying more than six months, apply for your TIE within one month of entry, with an appointment at the police station for your province.
- Register on the padrón at the town hall for your address.
- Keep your enrolment and insurance valid: the authorisation depends on continuing your studies.
- EU citizens staying more than three months apply for the registration certificate instead.
Wait for the right admission document
Applications commonly require an admission or enrolment document. Confirm the exact document and timing with the institution and relevant authority.
Use current official guidance
