How fees work in Spain
Public-university fees are public prices that each autonomous community sets per ECTS credit every year, and a first enrolment costs less than repeating a subject. What non-EU students without residence in Spain pay is decided by the region and sometimes the university: some charge them the same prices as Spanish students, while others, such as the Community of Madrid, charge a higher rate, and a study-stay authorisation does not count as residence for this purpose. Private universities and business schools set their own rates. Confirm whether a quoted amount is per credit, per year or for the whole programme, and which enrolment and certificate charges are separate.
What changes the price at a public university
- The autonomous community, which sets the price of each ECTS credit every year.
- The field of study, because many regions price more experimental subjects higher.
- First or repeated enrolment: repeating a subject costs more each time.
- Your status: non-EU students without residence in Spain may pay a different rate, depending on the region and the university.
- Official or own degree: títulos propios and business-school programmes are priced by the institution, not by public price rules.
Spanish-taught or English-taught
At public universities most bachelor's degrees are taught in Spanish or a co-official language; where an English-taught group exists, check whether it has its own price. Studying in Spanish usually opens the widest and least expensive choice, which is why many students spend a year on Spanish before starting a degree.
Confirm before payment
Always confirm the current fee, instalment options, deposits and refund rules directly with the institution before paying.
